Hydrogen sulfide, or hydrosulfuric acid (H2S), is a gas that may occur in your household water. Common names include rotten egg smell, stink gas and sewer gas. Hydrogen sulfide is insoluble in water, but underground, this gas remains trapped within the water. Sulfur is also the byproduct of the decomposition of naturally occurring organic material in our waters. Hydrogen sulfide often is accompanied by sulfur bacteria. This can grow in your homes plumbing system. From a physical standpoint, H2S is not harmful. However some people get nauseous because of the odors. 

H2S Sulfur can be gassed off in large open air tanks. Terrible bacteria can get in these tanks. I have seen amoeba and even baby frogs living in these tanks. Because these tanks are open air atmospheric tanks, they require a separate delivery pump be installed and maintained. Because of the contaminates that can get through the screens on these tanks, we do not install them. 

The same oxidation compressed air systems we use for iron filtration are also effective for hydrogen sulfide. As H2S passes through compressed air, it is precipitated. This particle is then trapped by catalytic filter medias in the filter tanks. Our Iron H2S Breaker III has fantastic results on H2S up to 6ppm and it is rated to 10ppm. Over 6ppm, we recommend to install an Air Pump system. In the worst cases and where we need high flow, the Odor Oxidizer does the job.

In serious cases of heavy sulfur when the water tastes and smells bad, removing sulfur bacteria that is growing in your home’s plumbing system requires sanitizing the entire system. Smart Water Technologies installs injection ports in your plumbing that a special chlorinator can hook up to for heavy chlorination to sanitize your plumbing. No water may be used overnight to effectuate the bacteria kill. The next day after a total run off of all the chlorinated water, your homes water will be fresh and odor free.
