*Rarely does water from a city water system require an iron filter.
If you have a well, there are four primary types of iron we deal with in our area. First is ferrous clear water iron. You can smell it, taste it, even feel it but you can’t see it (we call it in solution). Ferrous iron can only be filtered out through ion exchange in a water softener.
However, too much iron will destroy a water softener. Therefore, we use air oxidation techniques to convert ferrous iron to the second type, ferric which is oxidized iron. If you leave a glass with ferrous iron in it overnight, it will turn to ferric just from the air oxidizing it. The iron turns orange. Once the iron is oxidized, it can be removed mechanically with certain types of sand, zeolite crystals and other speciality medias that help filter pure water.
Our Iron Breaker III Catalytic Air Induction System is low cost and has great results on iron up to 6 ppm (parts per million). The Iron Breaker III is rated up 10 ppm.
However, we recommend and install an air pump system with a separate air tank that gives a greater capacity to convert Fe2 to Fe3 for easier removal of excess iron. We install the air pump system for iron levels 6-12 ppm.
Over 12 parts per million of iron, we install the Oxidizer. The Oxidizer is king of oxidation and the Oxidizer pump also increases water pressure to the whole home. The Oxidizer pumps water through an inductor that has a dual channel with one channel the size of a pencil where the water travels approximately 150 mph and inducts air in the process. The Oxidizer process tank has an air vent that releases extra air. The amazing things about these systems is the maintenance is easy and I can assist any customer that wants to do service their self.
The third type Of iron is iron bacteria. You can see it in your toilet water storage tank. You see slime, oil looking top water and in the worst situations, you will see jelly looking matter. On milder cases, we use ozone. With special cases, we use peroxide injection. The worse cases require a chlorine injection system.
The fourth type of iron is colloidal iron. This iron is so small that we need a coagulant to create a particle size large enough that can be removed from the water with the filter medias available today.
